You guys saw Kara's rainbow picture yesterday, so you know of the wonderful good luck symbol that greeted us as soon as we landed. I saw another good luck symbol as we started walking around the city: a burger chain, called, wait for it...

We've been here a whole day now, which I think completely qualifies us to pronounce our Judgment on Auckland. So: It's great! The city is very beautiful. We're staying about 20 minutes outside of downtown, in the neighborhood of Ponsonby. It's probably analogous to Lincoln Park or maybe Wicker Park- upscale, trendy, lots of fun and lots of money. The hostel is absolutely lovely (though I am definitely finding that hostel life is not for me. A surprise to you all, I'm sure.) You'll never guess the first thing I found! Auckland doesn't seem very foreign to us yet. The roads are similar (though opposite, obviously) and we haven't seen too much that stands out as something we don't immediately understand. I think that feeling might creep up on us here rather than happen all at once-- as we start to learn new slang, actually start driving, and get out of Auckland (which is considered the most international city in New Zealand). The most foreign thing is all of the nature. We made some friends from Chile at the hostel yesterday, and they drove us up to Mount Eden, which is a volcano in the middle of Auckland. From there we could see the whole city, which is largely made up of single houses and huge parks and greenery with water surrounding it all. There are tons of hills. Hills and greenery, in a city! Who can even handle it! Let's see, let's see. What else. Ah, the food! We had a delicious breakfast at a cafe yesterday morning that was New Zealand-y food (mince on toast and Flat Whites) but there's all sorts of options everywhere. One thing we didn't expect to see is Mexican food, but it's here! Better though is that there is delicious food from all over Southeast Asia- Thai, Malaysian, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Chinese. You guys saw Kara's rainbow picture yesterday, so you know of the wonderful good luck symbol that greeted us as soon as we landed. I saw another good luck symbol as we started walking around the city: a burger chain, called, wait for it... YESSSSSSSS. We're in Auckland through early Thursday (Wednesday for you folks stuck back in the past), and we've just booked our trip to the Hell's Gate Spa in Rotorua after that. We are doing WELL.
