White Island is an active volcano, but the absence of lava flows give tourists like us the opportunity to go a beach landing on the island if the weather is good enough and explore a terribly hazardous environment of acid lakes, gas vents, and sulfurous rock. Delicious!
We had to get up pretty early in the morning to get to our boat, but we made it in plenty of time despite my concerns that we were running late. (Apparently, I misunderstood our check-in time for our departure time.) We shared a quick espresso, and jumped on our boat for a two-hour ride to the island. It was a windy day, almost too windy for the trip to happen at all, but we were layered up and comfortable.
